and Pecha Kucha [Individual
Project, May 2022]
About: As part of the 1st-year review in my MFA program, we were tasked with creating this set of materials to synthesize our learnings, explain our design philosophy and what it’s informed by, and prepare to present and discuss with our advisors, professors, and peers.
Compendium: A collection of essays, visuals, and projects that I was most proud of during the 1st year of my MFA program. This compendium helped me solidify the idea and approach for my thesis: exploring space activation and placemaking at the intersection of BIPoC artists and cultural institutions.
Design Philosophy: Explicitly defining how I’m thinking about my creative practice: (1) for who, (2) for what reasons, (3) and the outcomes we’re striving for.
Pecha Kucha: This fast-paced, highly visual presentation format (Japanese for “chit-chat”) consists of exactly 20 slides that automatically advance every 20 seconds, totaling exactly 6 minutes and 40 seconds. The core philosophy is to “talk less, show more” by using arresting, text-free images.
Informed by this format and the other two materials, I was able to quickly and effectively explain my motivations, inspirations, and creative practice.
